The capture of Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb student who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie, Duchess von Hohenberg, on 28 June 1914, forms the basis of this painting. The killing of the Archduke and his wife precipitated a series of events leading to the outbreak of World War I.

The Surrender is informed by physical and digital archives, as browsing-culture and social constructs seem to come under a more prominent scrutiny. This work is made by assembling appropriated photographic information slowly and manually rendered through acrylic paint. The assembled, fragmented visual factoids eventually come to represent fictional narratives, but without beginnings or ends. Perhaps more like movie trailers in nature, but without the promise of resolution.
